No-Gi jiu jitsu is submission grappling without the kimono - faster pace, more scrambles, and techniques that translate directly to MMA and real-world self-defense.
At Pacific Martial Arts, you're learning from coaches who compete at the highest level of no-gi grappling: ADCC, IBJJF No-Gi Worlds, World League, and Fight to Win.
Since 1996, PMA has produced no-gi champions and built one of the most successful competition teams in California. Our no-gi program combines Eduardo Crema's ADCC-level instruction, Division 1 wrestlers teaching takedowns, and the proven Lachlan Giles system for submissions.
Whether you're a beginner or experienced grappler, you'll develop skills that work under pressure.
Eduardo Crema is a 2nd degree black belt, North American Brown Belt Champion, and competes at ADCC Opens (the world championships of no-gi grappling). When he teaches you a technique, he's using it successfully at the highest level. Most schools in Fresno don't have instructors competing at this caliber.
We have Division 1 collegiate wrestlers on staff, not just "good wrestlers." They teach takedowns, top pressure, and scrambling at a level unavailable anywhere else in Fresno. One is a national champion. This wrestling integration gives our students a massive advantage in competition.
We use the Lachlan Giles approach for no-gi, respected worldwide for his systematic breaking mechanics and leg lock expertise. You're learning proven systems that work at the highest levels of competition.
Tuesdays and Thursdays, Eduardo Crema runs dedicated competition prep classes. These sessions focus on game planning, strategy, and pressure testing your techniques against resisting opponents. Additional prep classes are added before major tournaments.
Even though we have specialized no-gi instructors, you still benefit from training at a school with 36 active black belts between No-Gi and Gi Jiu-Jitsu. The depth of knowledge available is unmatched in Fresno.
Your no-gi membership includes Gi, Wrestling, and Judo. Train all disciplines to build a complete grappling game. No extra charges - it's all included.
We teach Confidence Through Competence. At PMA we promote when you're genuinely ready. Every student progresses differently, depending on your capacity to learn, performance under pressure, and training frequency.
Some students progress faster, others slower. We watch you train daily. We see your progress in live rounds. We know exactly where you are in your development. There's no belt test - we simply promote you when you've earned it and when we know you’re ready.

Not wearing a gi fundamentally changes how jiu jitsu is practiced. The added grips from collar, sleeves, and lapels change to wrist controls and body locks, and athleticism plays a major role.
Without gi grips, scrambles happen faster. Positions are more fluid. You must react quickly and trust your technique under speed.
Takedowns become more important without gi grips to pull you down. Wrestling-based top pressure and control dominate no-gi.
Instead of collar and sleeve grips, you're fighting for wrist control, underhooks, and body locks. The grip game is completely different.
Leg locks are more accessible without gi pants blocking entries. The entire leg lock game opens up at higher levels (safely taught at PMA).
Guillotines, arm bars, and back attacks work differently without gi friction. Collar chokes disappear entirely. You learn new submission chains.
No-gi demands more conditioning. The faster pace and scrambles build explosive power and cardio simultaneously.
No-gi jiu jitsu is essential for MMA. Without gi grips, the techniques translate directly to the cage. Many MMA gyms don't have high-level no-gi instruction - PMA does.
If you want to compete at ADCC, IBJJF No-Gi Worlds, or Fight to Win, you need ADCC-level coaching. Eduardo Crema competes at these events and can prepare you.
If you train gi and want to develop faster reactions, better scrambling, and more dynamic movement, add no-gi to your training.
Former wrestlers love no-gi because it feels familiar. You can use your wrestling base and add submissions.
Real altercations don't involve BJJ gi's. No-gi techniques work when someone is wearing a t-shirt, tank top, or shirtless.
The pace of no-gi provides an intense cardio workout. You'll burn calories, build functional strength, and improve conditioning rapidly.

Rob began his Jiu-Jitsu training in 2008 and achieved Black Belt in 2024. His signature move is Half Butterfly and Sub Bow and Arrow.
Rob's training philosophy is, "You can sit on the wall and watch upper belts roll or you can get out there and become one of the upper belts."
Rob's favorite quote is from Les Brown, "If you do what is easy, your life will be hard. But if you do what is hard, your life will be easy."
He has competed in JJWL, Fight2Win, IBJJF Masters, Grapple for the Cure, America's Cup, and multiple Grappling X.tournaments.

Ryan Collins has been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Pacific Martial Arts since 2011, progressing through every belt level within the academy. Over the years, his training has become more than just a way to stay active, it has sharpened his ability to problem-solve, helped him grow comfortable in challenging situations, and evolved into a creative outlet.
He was awarded his black belt in June 2023.
Ryan’s favorite submissions include the bow and arrow choke and the north-south choke. His approach to training is simple: enjoy the process, have fun, don’t get caught up in wins and losses in the training room, and keep showing up.

Not just practitioners who wrestled in high school. We have Division 1 collegiate wrestlers, including a national champion, teaching takedowns and top control.

- Single leg takedowns
- Double leg takedowns
- High crotch attacks
- Snap downs to front headlock
- Ankle picks
- Arm drags to back takes
- Top pressure and ride control
- Scrambling fundamentals
No-gi classes are 90 minutes, giving you time for warm-ups, technique, drilling, and extensive live rounds. The pace is faster than gi, so conditioning is built in.
No-gi classes start as early as 6am, five days per week. We're open 7 days a week with multiple sessions daily. Train at any of our 4 locations with one membership.
Beginners train alongside advanced students. Higher belts help lower belts improve. Different skill levels force you to adjust your game.
- 15 minutes: Warm-ups and conditioning
- 30 minutes: Technique instruction (2 techniques, 15 min each)
- 15 minutes: Situational training using those techniques
- 30 minutes: Live rounds (sparring)
Before tournaments, we adjust class structure to focus more on competition preparation.
Average class size is round 40 students. We maintain a student-teacher ratio of 10:1 across all programs.
Competition Prep Classes: Tuesdays and Thursdays with Eduardo Crema. These classes are for students preparing for upcoming tournaments. Game planning, rule review, strategy rehearsal, and pressure testing.
Judo for Jiu-Jitsu Also Available - Combined with wrestling, you develop a complete throwing and takedown game.

Tell Matt Smith Sensei you want to compete in no-gi. He gives you specific techniques to work on. You get invited to Eduardo's competition prep classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Before tournaments, we host special prep practices. We review competition rules (different federations have different rules). We help you develop a game plan based on your strengths. We have you rehearse strategies. We add resistance so you learn to execute under pressure.
We host 2 in-house no-gi tournaments annually, one in spring and one in fall/winter. They give you competition experience in a low-pressure setting. You learn to perform under stress. You see where your game needs work. It builds confidence for larger tournaments.
Some schools have open mat time where students train without instructors present. We don't offer this for safety reasons. What we offer instead are extensive live rounds during class under instructor supervision, cross-training opportunities with other gyms (with coaching present), and our 90-minute classes provide 30 minutes of live rounds, which is substantial mat time.
