What Do Students and Parents Love About PMA?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes cost?

Memberships start at $159/month on a 6-month plan, or $199/month with no long-term commitment. Enrollment is a one-time $50 fee that includes your gi, so there's nothing extra to buy before you start. Family discounts of $50 to $100 off are available if more than one person in your household trains with us. Before you commit to anything, book a free consultation and try a free class, no gear required.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu effective for self-defense?

Yes. BJJ was built specifically to let a smaller, weaker person control a larger, stronger opponent through leverage and technique instead of strikes or raw power, and that's exactly what we teach.

Our head instructor Matt Smith is a 4th degree black belt trained under Professor David Camarillo in the Gracie lineage, and our coaching team includes Eduardo Crema, a North American Brown Belt Champion with podium finishes at IBJJF and ADCC Opens. Across our four locations we have 36 active black belts on staff, more than most Fresno-area schools combined.

What should I expect at my first class?

You'll start with a free consultation, in person or by phone, so we can point you to the right class for your goals. From there you'll join a free class to see the coaching and the room for yourself, no gi or experience required. Adult classes run about 90 minutes and move through a warmup, technique breakdown, situational drilling, and live training; kids and fundamentals classes run about 60 minutes.

What do I need to wear or bring to my first class?

Comfortable athletic clothes and a water bottle are all you need for your free trial class. Once you enroll, your $50 enrollment fee includes a gi, so you don't need to buy one before you start.

Do I need to be in shape or have experience to start?

No. BJJ is built around technique and leverage, not existing strength or fitness, so we have students starting at every fitness level. Most people find their conditioning improves from training rather than needing to arrive in shape.

What age can my child start, and is BJJ safe for kids?

We offer kids programs starting at age 3, grouped by age so training matches where your child actually is, not just how old they are. Classes are coached and supervised at every level. The best way to know if your child is ready is to bring them to a free class and see for yourself.

How often should I train, and how long does it take to get my blue belt?

Most students see real progress training two to three times a week, though even once a week builds skill over time. Belt promotions in BJJ are based on mat time and how you actually perform, not a fixed schedule, so we won't promise you a blue belt by a certain date. Consistent training is what gets you there fastest.

Is your Fresno location just a BJJ gym, or do I get full gym access?

$159/mo and up memberships includes full access to the 38,000-square-foot Herndon Valley Fitness facility we train inside, plus locker rooms and showers (adults only). Herndon Valley Fitness is a complete gym with strength equipment, free weights, cardio machines, exercise classes, and more.

Is Jiu-Jitsu safe? What about injuries?

Training is coached and supervised at every level, with drilling and live rolling paced to each student's experience. As with any physical sport, injuries can happen, but BJJ's culture of tapping out before things go too far is part of what makes it lower-impact than striking-based martial arts.

How do I get started?

Book a free consultation, in person or by phone, then join a free class, no gi or experience required. Call (559) 436-4641 or book online to set it up.
